What Is Orton-Gillingham?

In the 1930’s neurologist Dr. Samuel T. Orton and educator, psychologist Anna Gillingham developed the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading. This style of instruction for students with dyslexia combines multi-sensory techniques and the structure of the English language.

  • Items taught include: phonemes and morphemes, such as prefixes, suffixes, and roots.
  • Common spelling rules are introduced as well.
  • Multi-sensory education incorporates the three learning pathways, which are: auditory, kinesthetic, and visual.

This approach is beneficial not only for students with dyslexia, but for all learners.

Mayerson Academy’s Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading  Practicum I – ONLINE program is accredited by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). Participants who successfully complete both Practicum I and II will earn Mayerson Academy’s Certificate in Orton-Gillingham at the Teaching / Practitioner Level and are eligible to apply for Practitioner Certification with IDA. The Academy’s program was deemed “exemplary professional development” in the Ohio Department of Education’s Dyslexia Pilot.

The Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Practicum I Online encompasses 16 weeks of instruction, including 45 hours of lecture and a 16-hour practicum. The course focuses on the phonology, orthography and structure of the English language; takes a comprehensive look at how students learn to read and write; and helps teachers to recognize the characteristics of learning disabilities. Teachers learn to plan and implement systematic, explicit, multisensory language instruction that meets the guidelines of the National Reading Panel and has been proven to be most effective in teaching students with Dyslexia and other reading difficulties. Teachers also learn how to incorporate Orton-Gillingham (OG) methodology into their core reading program.

What makes Mayerson Academy’s program unique is the practicum: each participant is assigned to a Master Teacher who provides one-to-one coaching and feedback on the creation and teaching of 16 lesson plans custom-tailored for the student the participant is tutoring during the course. Using the Edthena platform, participants upload their lessons and videos of their instruction, enabling instructors to give specific feedback at point of need on both planning and implementation of OG methodology. The maximum instructor/participant ratio in any cohort is 8:1.
