One of the best things about working on a startup venture is the people and organizations you meet along the way.
Although the startup world can sometimes feel lonely, there are times when it feels like we are part of a greater community working toward the greater good.
Recently, we met with Beech Acres Parenting Center to see if we had synergies. It was a great community building meeting of minds with a like-minded organization.
Scripps Howard Foundation Literacy Grants
Always on the lookout for meaningful connections, our See Word Reading mentor Nancy Koors, had shared the list of the non-profit organizations competing for the Scripps Howard literacy grant.
This list comprised several organizations with similar goals of literacy. To break the cycle of poverty in Greater Cincinnati, the funding organizations including the Scripps Howard Foundation, the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, and the Duke Energy Foundation, selected family literacy as a means to foster reading in young children and bolster their vocabulary. They focus on education as a key pathway out of poverty. You can learn about the 2018 finalist organizations here.
Beech Acres Parenting Center
One organization on the list, Beech Acres Parenting Center stood out immediately. This organization has multiple parent and family support programs that looked like ideal partners to help trial See Word Reading.
Last week, we had the pleasure of meeting with representatives from three of their programs all of which support goals of strengthening children and families. As See Word Reading is designed to help with early literacy skills for preschool and kindergarten age children, we aligned with a kindergarten readiness program and other programs designed to support parents as first teachers.
The mission at Beech Acres is to inspire and equip today’s parents, families, and communities to raise capable, caring, contributing children. It was a pleasure to learn about all the work in homes and schools that they support.
The team was helpful with sharing ideas and contacts. We look forward to future collaboration efforts with the team.
